Summary: In which Sirius is a Doctor Who fanboy, James gets progressively more arseholed as the night progresses, and sanity is conspicuous by its absence. Notes: Co-authored during a marathon period of insanity, I warn in advance for excessive use of capslock, a great deal of terrible language, and an awful lot of innuendo despite its gen status. 	2007.06.27  01.15 Recs! Two fics I read today I simply have to pass on, because they're both wonderful. Dear Alastor, posted today at hp_summergen - G, Remus, Alastor Moody. “I’ve had a letter from Professor Lupin about this class,” says Moody in GoF. This is the letter. A fantastic take on the letter Remus wrote after his year teaching, serving to remind me once again why Remus as a professor is pretty much my favourite thing in canon. There's a lot of wonderful details about his former students, and the tone of it is spot on. I really enjoyed it immensely, highly recommended! And I was going to post that alone, but then the following cropped up on my flist, which I'm delighted to add! End of Days by magnetic_pole - Good Omens, G, Crowley, Aziraphale. Harry Potter hadn't seemed a likely vehicle for promoting chaos in the earthly realm. So, those two discussing Harry Potter is made of win in any case, and this is a wonderfully funny story, but when you add on top of that Maggie's patented depth and layers, it's just fantastic. Hugely enjoyable, note-perfect in both fandoms, and I'm more than a little thrilled to have it connected to me! --- Yesterday, there was Jack gen, Long Time Coming, which sort of took me by surprise and came out of nowhere. I return to regularly scheduled writing plans now - Marauders fic for trowicia is coming along nicely, as is dw_cross - when I've got where that's going a bit more concrete, I'll no doubt do some beta pleading. 	2007.04.29  00.24 Remix Recs: Part the Sixth Part the First, Part the Second, Part the Third, Part the Fourth and Part the Fifth. Ok, the final instalment. I'm pretty sure I've read every fic I wanted to, though it'll take tomorrow's reveal to see if there's anything I've missed. It's been fun doing this this week, if only as a way to remind myself how completely awesome and talented fandom is. The overall quality of the archive blows my mind, really. --- Title: Tell Me You Love Me (The Orbital Capture Mix) Author: mad_maudlin. Summary: Sirius and Remus are locked in orbit. Rating: PG-13 Fandom: Harry Potter Warnings: Language, alcoholism, general desolation Original story: You Only Tell Me You Love Me When You're Drunk by kyasuriin. Read it here. Gritty but strangely beautiful - the story from a drunk Sirius' POV is really very compelling. Some lovely use of metaphor in this, but oh they're both so miserable and I just want to hug them both. Reasons to read: for good mistrust angst; for an alcohol-induced POV; for a grim poetic quality. --- Title: Ways of Not Speaking (Poetry In Motion Remix) Author: loneraven. Summary: Up there in heaven, the pubs never close. Fandom: Harry Potter Characters: Remus, Harry, Tonks. Rating: PG-13 Original story: Secrets, Lies and Guinness Pies, by gunderpants. Read it here. This is one of the best stories about grief and mourning I've read in a long time. It doesn't pull punches or overdo the angst, it's just beautiful and dismal and human. Fantastically characterised, and at times funny, ridiculous and heart-breaking. Reasons to read: for Sirius closure; for a great Remus-Harry dynamic; for good grief fic. --- Title: Our Daily Bread (The Whole of the Moon Remix) Author: krabapple. Summary: Remus has to cope with Grimmauld Place, too. Fandom: Harry Potter Pairing: Remus Lupin/Sirius Black Rating: PG-13 Original story: Untitled Fic for Elanor Two by lacylu42. Read it here. Everyday life made into living poetry here. Remus trying to be ordinary and hopeful and there's so much emotion just beneath the surface. Every detail mentioned is perfect. Reasons to read: for gorgeous prose; for Remus battling against it all; for the beauty of ordinary things. --- I could go on. And on and on. But really, enough now. I've had a great time reading this week, and must have got through 40+ stories. You all win so hard - actually, I can't wait to see which ones my flist wrote, so many styles here seemed really familiar to me, but I'm a hopeless guesser more specifically than that. --- What with nest_of_spiders and springtime_gen nearly over too (both of which I've neglected horrifically this week), things will probably be a fair bit quieter around here soon. Plus, there is the minor fact that I have exams looming ever more menacingly, a bit more time revising and a bit less time devoted to fandom might be an idea. *sigh*

	2007.04.28  08.48 Remix Recs: Part the Fifth Part the First, Part the Second, Part the Third and Part the Fourth. --- Title: Universal Safety Net (The 10 Seconds Remix) Author: lizbee. Summary: Rose promised ten seconds. Rating: G Fandom: Doctor Who Warnings: None Spoilers: "World War 3" and "Father's Day" Original story: "Universal Safety Net" by warinbabylon. Read it here. A lovely return to the early days of Series One, with great takes on Jackie and Mickey as well as Rose and the Doctor. I love the structure of it, and the way the authors plays with the ten seconds idea. It fits beautifully into lots of different pieces of canon. And you know, Nine, who I am going through a big phase of loving at the moment. Reasons to read: If you want some good Series One fic; if you need some Tyler love; Nine! --- Title: The Fallacy of Hirsuteness (The Howard Hughes Jr Remix) Author: gunderpants. Summary: Remus Lupin must resort to drastic measures when his friend's self-imposed exile takes a turn for the ludicrous. Rating: PG for language Fandom: Harry Potter Title, Author and URL of original story: "The Fallacy of Loneliness", by lupinslittlesis. Read it here. This is ridiculous and very funny but underneath there's some fabulous characterisation and a real sense of sadness. Tonks makes a wonderful guest appearance, as does Dumbledore, and Sirius' lengths of crazy are mind-boggling and hilarious. But oh, Remus, there's so much underneath the surface of this fic. Reasons to read: for a great Grimmauld Place/Order dynamic; for Sirius being absolutely insane; for humorous fic with a serious edge. --- Title: This Widening Bed (This Bed Has Seen It All Remix) Author: shaggydogstail. Summary: Sirius Black, his bed, and the people he shared it with. Fandom: Harry Potter Pairing: Sirius Black/Remus Lupin Rating: PG-13 Original story: This Widening Bed by wildestranger. Read it here. This is a wonderful idea, fantastically executed. The history of one bed, and through it all of Sirius' relationships with others. Each segment is different and wonderfully done. There's a lot of stuff packed in here, a very good read. Reasons to read: for an exploration of Sirius; for a motif running through someone's life; for some lovely character interaction.

	2007.04.26  20.44 Remix Recs: Part the Fourth - Not Marauders! Sick of me yet? =P Part the First, Part the Second and Part the Third. Today: not Marauders (well, Lily's in one, but ssh), time to branch a little. --- Title: The Next Great Adventure (Alla Prima Remix) Author: st_aurafina. Summary: The greatest magic demands the greatest price. Rating: PG Fandom: Harry Potter Original story: The Next Great Adventure, by vissy Read it here. So, this is Albus Dumbledore/Phineus Nigellus. And well, it works! Brilliantly, in fact. The tone of this is just perfect, it's in five segments from 1871 to 1997 and oh, all of the dialogue is to die for, the remixer's really got it spot-on. I don't believe I've ever read Dumbledore-centric fic before, and this is a rather fine place to start! And plus, it's got some really interesting ideas on portraits, and features the Mona Lisa. Reasons to read: if you're fond of rarepairs; if you love Phineas' snark; if you're interested in wizarding art. --- Title: Recover (The Optional Remix) Author: elucreh. Summary: This complex enchantment is the means to major changes in past world events… Rating: PG Fandom: Harry Potter Original Story: Hidden by anansay. Read it here. This is really quite a striking piece - the formatting takes a moment to adjust to, but it's actually very effective at telling this story. Hermione, Lily and Bellatrix converge on a young Harry, all with their different reasons, through some very messed-up and ingenious time-twisting. Equal parts tragic and fascinating. Reasons to read: if you like what-might-have-beens; if you like different POVs on the same events; if you like interesting time-warping stories. --- Title: Yellow And Red Make Grey (Colours At Twilight Remix) Author: topaz_eyes. Summary: Percy finally finds Ginny. Rating: PG Fandom: Harry Potter Title, Author and URL of original story: Yellow – Draft #1 by jaebi_lit. Read it here. This takes an idea I've read before - Harry regressed in some way after a traumatic final battle - and has a different take on it, through its effects on other people, namely Ginny. And its yet another first for me in Percy POV, and he's wonderful here - old and tired, and devoid a lot of his former zest and officiousness. The imagery's very subdued but beautiful, and it's just a lovely story. --- I'm looking forward to reveals, now. Partly because I want to see what all my lovely flist participating wrote (and whether any of my guesses are right!), slightly because I want to claim mine, but mostly because I really want to chat to my remixer and remixee about the whole thing. My remixee, particularly, because of what I did to her story and, well. Keeping quiet now.

	2007.04.25  21.52 Remix Recs: Part the Third - James/Remus, Aziraphale/Crowley (Good Omens) Ok, going for some more upbeat things today! Eesh, I still have about 15 stories bookmarked I want to read, this is crazy! Part the First and Part the Second. --- Title: Bareback Flying On A Really Big Duck (The Dive and Drown Remix) Author: dracofiend. Summary Remus likes James. James knows it. Sort of. Rating: R Fandom: Harry Potter Original Fix Remixed: Away Laughing On A Fast Camel, by the lovely sazzlette. Read it here. Get thee to the original if you haven't read it first, because it's fab and I think will enhance your appreciation of the remix. This is light and funny and chock-a-block of awkward sexual tension. James is completely ridiculous and poor Remus is just wonderful as he tries to navigate the hazards of spending two weeks alone with him. I was smiling through a lot of it, and it's a lovely, breezy read. Oh, boys. Reasons to read: if you want to know how on earth James/Remus could work anyway; if you like good Marauders banter; if you want a really good slice of UST. --- Title: Both Odd and Even (The f(x)=0 Remix) Author: melandry. Summary: Aziraphale wants to kiss Crowley. He does. Rating: R Fandom: Good Omens Title, Author and URL of original story: Both Odd and Even by apple_pi. Read it here. Well, as it's one of only two GO stories in the Remix I imagine a fair amount of you will already have seen this, but if you haven't then hop along! POV change is used wonderfully here, and interestingly there's an initiator change as well, as in the original it's Crowley who starts events. I adore the characterisation of them both here, especially Aziraphale, who I sort of want to squish to discorporation then take home with me. And there are lovely footnotes and everything. Reasons to read; if you'd like some getting-together fic; if you like the angelic/demonic banter; if you just want a delicious piece of Aziraphale/Crowley goodness.

	2007.04.24  20.17 Remix Recs: Part the Second - Communism, Brothers & Politics First and foremost, wishing lyras an extremely happy birthday - I hope you are having a wonderful day! &hearts As the wonderful combination of a fab writer and a lovely person, you deserve it! --- Now, I continue with the reccing. Yesterday's post here if you missed. Going with three today, with more tomorrow. Title: The Red and the Black (The Neverland Remix) Author: daphnaea. Summary: Sirius is reading The Communist Manifesto. Somehow, Remus knows, this will end in disaster. Fandom: Harry Potter Characters:Sirius Black, Remus Lupin Rating: PG-13 Original Story: Marked by elucreh Part One of Three. So, what with it being split into three parts and all, this is long. And it's very prose-y, and so really what you need to do is set aside a bit of time for this one. But it is completely worth it. Everyone loves a good communist!Sirius fic in the first place, yes? Now imagine the joy of this being enforced on the rest of Gryffindor. But it's not just a fun caper, it's far more than that. This is a deeply intelligent, insightful fic that has a lot to say about a lot of things. Sirius and Remus are completely perfect here, and the author has gone so in-depth into what makes them tick. James, Peter and Lily when they are appear are equally well-drawn. It's a story that actually deals with issues inherent in communism - think Animal Farm but much more light-hearted, and plus it adds in the Peter Pan element, which makes so much sense I cannot believe it has never occurred to me before. She/he's found a veritable plethora of quotes from both works that really tie into the progress of the story beautifully. Reasons to read: you like character-driven stories; you like communist!Sirius; you like stories about the awkward growing up of the Marauders; you'd like something with brains to really get your teeth into. --- Title: Falling Apart in Slow Motion (The Brother's Keeper Remix) Author: luzdeestrellas. Summary: "You're my brother," he says. Regulus pauses, pressing his lips together. "No, I'm not." Fandom: Harry Potter Characters: Sirius Black, Regulus Black Rating: PG Original story: A Marauder's Map, by xylodemon Read it here! Firstly - if you haven't read the original, then go go go! Because it's an awesome story, and I was quite excited to see it reworked. The remix stretches out over most of Sirius' life, moving back and forth between times and full of these beautifully written, heart-breaking scenes, all about Regulus and him. Sirius is fabulously written here, and it's packed full of beautiful images. A very satisfying, if desperately sad. Reasons to read: If you'd like a fresh take on the Sirius-Regulus dynamic; if you're a fan of xylodemon's original; if you need an extremely pretty bit of angst in your life. --- Title: The Grimmauld Place Irregulars (The Fine, Upstanding Families Remix) Author: magnetic_pole. Summary: Voldemort's supporters gather at 12, Grimmauld Place, the night Barty Crouch takes the Dark Mark. Rating: PG Fandom: Harry Potter Characters: Winky; Barty Crouch, Junior; Lucius Malfoy; Bellatrix Black Lestrange, Narcissa Black; Regulus Black; Bartemius Crouch, Senior Warnings: Mostly gen with slash content Original story: Untitled drabble by aillil. eta: Now with link! here. I rarely read most of these characters, but this is immensely enjoyable in a slightly macabre sort of way. Under the veneer of a Black society function, many things are going on. The author has rather brilliantly used lots of POVs in this, all of which add something to the story's journey. There's a lot crammed in here, with sub-plots and allusions to future events and it's all wonderfully atmospheric. Reasons to read: if you like First War political machinations; if you like big multi-character stories; if you're interested in the beginnings of the Death Eaters.

	2007.04.23  19.22 Remix Recs: Part the First - a HP/DW crossover and some Remus & Regulus gen I really should develop a better system for going through the archive than just clicking away merrily on whatever catches my eye, but not to worry! In my sporadic travels so far I have uncovered many, many glorious things. Actually, can I insert a quick yay! at this point. Browsing through tags and looking at how often different pairings have been written, Remus/Sirius stands out by a mile. The runner-up is SGA's McKay/Shepphard at 12, then Sam/Dean from Supernatural with 10 stories, after that there's nothing over 5 in any fandom. The pairing lives, folks! And out of the 64 HP fandom entries, 32 are tagged as featuring Sirius, while Remus clocks in a very respectable 26. Harry's down at 16 tags, outstripping his dad who's got 11. Lily gets 7 stories as does Snape, Regulus 5, and Peter only 3. Harry's the only character from his generation to pick up a significant number of fics. *shrug* Well, I think all that's interesting, anyway. Comment on fandom in general, or just the people who have heard about/are drawn to signing up for Remix? eta: It's worth noting that I can't actually, you know, read, and that those numbers aren't correct! Also, other pairings do rate higher as a percentage - thanks, topaz_eyes! So, I thought about doing one big flaily recs post, and then imagined my poor flist's eyes glazing over as they looked for their one :P scrolled right on past my ramblings. So, take the recs in handy-dandy bitesize formats! Probably a couple of stories a day. And perhaps that might work better, and maybe even trick you into clicking a link! Well then, here we go! --- Title: Who So Loves Believes the Impossible (The Metaphysical Gravity Remix) Author: krabapple Summary: The more things change, the more they change. Sirius Black and Rose Tyler face brave new worlds. Fandom: Harry Potter/Doctor Who (2005) Pairing: Rose Tyler/Doctor (Ten); Sirius Black/Remus Lupin. Characters: Rose Tyler, Sirius Black Rating: PG Original story: On the Other Side by thistlerose. Part One of Two. Oh, this is the story I wish I'd written. It's a breath-taking, parallel universe adventure that's beautifully written, wonderfully characterised and completely engrossing. I honestly love it to bits. Sirius finds himself in Rose's world, and it's about the two of them teaming up [spoilers through Doomsday]. And the alternative versions of the people Sirius knows and has to meet all over again are fabulous and heart-breaking. Obviously it's a little bit on the long side, but set aside a bit of time, get rid of distractions and just read it. Reasons to read: if you like both fandoms (oh, but HP-only folks, give it a go as well! I think there's a good chance it'd make at least some sense, and the Sirius bits alone are worth it); if you enjoy good AU fic; if you like epic plot; if you like Bring Back Black or Bring Back Rose stories. --- And another one. I can't exactly top my fangirling of the last one, but this is really excellent and worth reading too. Title: Not Enough (with the Someone's Future Coda) Author: lupinslittlesis. Summary: Desperation makes Regulus turn to his least favorite "person" in the world. Rating: PG-13 Fandom: Harry Potter Title, Author and URL of original story: The original story is Do You See Someone With a Future? by leiascully. Read it here. It's about Regulus and Remus, and so of course it's all about Sirius too, in a way. The parallels in their lives are drawn wonderfully, capturing a series of moments from their lives that are lovely in themselves, but even better contrasted against each other. Then Regulus goes to Remus for help, and oh. It is, of course, tragic, but it's a great take on Regulus' last days with some very original ideas. Reasons to read: If you like in-depth character exploration; if you're into one-liners that capture moods and situations; if you're a Regulus and Remus fan. --- More tomorrow!

	2007.04.22  22.21 It's the remixxx! I know, I know, I'm some fiendish update-y thing these days, but another post was necessary to do what is only fitting and proper - thank my remixer! The Shores of the Sea has been rewoven into The Edge of the Ocean (The Hudson Palisades Remix), and it's lovely and changed point of view and generally full of yay. The standard of this is ridiculously high, and I am reading like a mofo with a handy dandy bookmarks folder to hand, so expect a big ol' multi-fandom rec post of squee sometime soon. My emotions have run the gamut already, and I've only read a few stories so far! Oh, internet, how I love thee. So yeah, now I understand why everyone loves this exchange so.
